The Volcanoes
The people of The Azores have coexisted and coexist in the present with the volcanic activity. In fact, the last vestiges - according to some legends - of the mythological Atlantis are guarded by intricate and abrupt littorals that hide in the interior wide craters turned into lagoons.
Due to its volcanic origin the land of the Azores is still warm and breathes fiery. As an example das Furnas do Enxofrena Terceira Island.
Definitively, the archipelago offers the only scene to observe and to know, the phenomenon of the vulcanology. The last eruption of The Azores took place in Faial in 1957, where a small volcano arose from the sea covering of ash and leaving a landscape that even today is a mute testimony of the natural forces that forged the islands. Pico has the honor to be the highest top of Portugal with 2.351 meters.
