The worry of the Azores for the protection of the Nature and the defence of the Environment has led in 1995 the European Union to attribute, the honorific mention of the European Tourism and Environment Prize. There are a lot of protected zones, parks and forest areas of playtime, in the different islands, reaffirm the duty of the Regional Government for the preservation of the ecosystems of the Archipelago.

In the Azores, real floating garden due to its hazes, can find clumps of laurisilva, relics of the absorbent wood that was covering the archipelago before being inhabited. There is a great profusion of wild flowers and botanical species of small freightage, many of which come from the original flora.

The most attractive elements of the terrestrial fauna are the marine birds and diverse birds, between them the priolo, endemic species.
