Climbing

Between the sports of adrenaline some walks by foot towards places of difficult access in São Jorge, and others of major importance as the climbing to the Peak, the highest mountain of Portugal.

Considered one of the most beautiful volcanoes of the world, Pico, from a distance, it seems to be easy to climb, which turns into a challenge for many of its visitors. The tour by foot begins next to Cabeço das Cabras (near 1.200 meters); is a climbing that demands experience and some training, footwear and appropriate wardrobe obligatorily to be accompanied by a guide. The whole raise and descent takes between four and five hours and allows admiring landscapes of slightly common beauty.

The Furna is a cavern inside the volcanic cone, covered by dense endemic vegetation, which is becoming less up to disappearing to 2.000 meters. The central crater or Big Pico, with near 700 meters of diameter, is majestic. In there is born the Piquinho, volcanic cone that rises 50 meters over the border of the crater, with three or four fumaroles in the top. If there were no clouds.

it is possible to sight the remaining islands of the Central Group (Faial, São Jorge, Graciosa and Terceira).
